WAVERLY — In the short time that Waverly has had a girls soccer program, the Tigers have certainly taken advantage of opportunities presented.
In 2018, Waverly won its first-ever sectional title. Following that up in 2019, the Tigers won a share of the Southern Ohio Conference crown.
And, in 2020, they’ve topped those accomplishments by winning their first outright SOC banner.
Monday’s 10-0 win over West (0-12-1, 0-8-1 SOC) was the final step needed in order to nail down a second consecutive league title. Only, this time, it’s undisputed.
“Words can not express the feeling of winning this championship,” Waverly coach Chris Murphy said. “It was nice to win it on our home field in front of our home crowd, and with these wonderful ladies. We are a family and everyone worked so hard to achieve this. It’s great that it’s finally happened.”
The victory wasn’t the only piece of history made.
Senior Loren Moran also etched herself into the books with her 100th career goal — she scored three in total.
“We would also like to congratulate Loren Moran on achieving her 100th goal,” Murphy said. “Very excited and happy for her as well.”
Moran is the second Tiger to score her 100th goal this season. Fellow senior Zoiee Smith did so earlier this season.
Moran’s hat trick led the Tigers (11-2-1, 8-0-1 SOC) on Monday. Smith and Amelia Willis also helped out, scoring two each, while Macey Gecowets, Alexis Murphy and Delani Teeters added one.
Kylie Smith passed out three assists, her third three-assist game this season, while Teeters, Zoiee Smith and Kylee Murphy all had an assist as well.
“Winning the SOC outright has been a goal since the beginning of the season,” Murphy said. “I couldn’t be happier for these girls to see that goal come to fruition.”
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, finishing the conference season against Northwest. A win means an undefeated season in the league.
