KINNIKINNICK — Jay Wyman said it best after Westfall’s season-opening performance Friday afternoon.
“I think we made some heads turn today.”
Both Wyman, individually, and the Mustangs, as a group, silenced their doubters while cruising to a 59-35 win over McClain.
“We knew that everyone was going to focus on Lucas [Blackburn] this year,” Westfall coach Christian Meister said. “Judging by the film from our scrimmages, everyone knew where we were going to go with the ball. So Jay and Hayden [Lemaster] stepped up big today.
Wyman and Lemaster made a habit of making McClain’s defense pay, leading the Mustangs (1-0) by combining to score 38 points. Wyman had 20 points and hit five 3-pointers while Lemaster added 18 of his own. Blackburn was also a factor, scoring 14 points.
The Mustangs will return to action Saturday at Washington.
“We tell our kids that if they play hard, other things will figure themselves out,” Meister said. “We have a lot to fix defensively, but it’s a great start.”

The Cavaliers (1-0) started their season with a 19-point win over Maysville at the Zanesville Tip-Off Classic, Friday afternoon.
Tre Beard led the team with 25 points while shooting 5-of-6 from the 3-point arc. Jayvon Maughmer had 22 points, Brandon Noel had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Vincent Roper had three points, three assists and five steals.
Chillicothe is back in action Saturday night, facing Sheridan at Zanesville.

The Bearcats (1-0) got 28 points from Cordell Grubb in their season opener, a six-point road win over Clay.
Grubb had 11 field goals and hit five free throws to account for 28 while Cruz McFadden also chipped in with 14 points. Adam Brauner also hit double-digit scoring figures with 12 points.

The Senators (1-0) started their season on the right foot with a double-digit win over Notre Dame (0-1) Friday evening.
Leading West in the win was Nick Davis, who scored 12 points while Marion Phillips added 11 of his own. For Notre Dame, sophomore Jermaine Powell led the way with a game-high 18 points while Jarren Edgington had 11.

The Eagles (1-0) started their season with an 11-point road win at Green (0-1) Friday evening in non-league action.
Leading Eastern in scoring was Hunter Cochenour with a game-high 34 points, thanks in part to seven 3-point field goals.
Levi Sampson led the Bobcats with 21 points while Gage Sampson had 16.

The Warriors (2-0) continued their hot start with a close win over Hillsboro in their home opener Friday evening.
Leading Adena to the win was Cheyenne Ater with seven points while Makaela Lovely had five. In total, seven different Warriors scored.
For Hillsboro (1-2), Josie Hopkins had nine points while Jordan Moberly had six.

The bucket gave Lewis four points on the evening, but that’s all she needed.
Leading Northwest in scoring was Haidyn Wamsley with 16 points while Valeria Copas added 10 of her own. Keirah Potts also chipped in with six points.
Oak Hill (0-1, 0-1 SOC II) got a huge effort from Caitlyn Brisker, who scored a game-high 30 points while Chloe Chambers added 10.
