HILLSBORO — Heading into next week’s Ohio Region V Tournament, Chillicothe Post 757 seems to be hobbling instead of sprinting.
Due, in part, to errors and stranded base runners, the Colts (11-17) traveled to Hillsboro 129 Tuesday evening and dropped a 13-12 decision — 757 committed three errors in the field and left nine runners on the base paths.
After grabbing a 5-1 lead, 757 built an 11-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth inning … then the floodgates opened. Hillsboro scored seven runs in the sixth to tie the ballgame before, eventually, plating the game-winning run in the seventh.
Chillicothe’s Harley Patterson finished the game 1-for-4 with a grand slam in the sixth inning. Landyn Patterson was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs, and Ethan Cunningham went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
For Hillsboro (8-20), John Salyers had a career night by finishing 2-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and five RBIs. Payton Bell also helped out, going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and three RBIs while Drew Pitzer went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Both teams will be in action at this weekend’s opening round of the Region V Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium. Hillsboro 129 opens with Circleville 134 at 9 a.m. while Chillicothe 757 matches up with Harrison 199 at 11:45 a.m.
