Peebles’ Payton Johnson wins Athlete of the Week honors

Johnson tallied 21 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Eastern Brown.

SOSA Staff Report

PEEBLES — Payton Johnson didn’t just arrive on the scene. She’s made a splash while doing so.

The freshman guard has done a little bit of everything for Peebles this season, providing a one-two punch for the Indians’ backcourt alongside Jacey Justice.

Last week, in a key tilt within Southern Hills Athletic Conference action, Johnson scored 21 points and collected 15 rebounds. That performance helped Peebles hand Eastern Brown its first loss of the season.

For that reason, Johnson has been named SOSA’s Athlete of the Week.

Out of 1,189 public votes, Johnson accounted for 602 or 50.6 percent of the total. Piketon’s Chris Chandler finished second in the voting with 301, Southeastern’s Sierra Mitten was third with a count of 169, and Hillsboro’s Ryan Scott was fourth at 117.

Johnson received three of the four votes from the guys at SOSA as well.

For her efforts, Johnson will receive a free t-shirt, thanks to Mile Tree Screen Printing, a free appetizer via Longhorn Steakhouse, and two free Wendy’s combo meals via Schmidt Family Restaurant Group.
