CHILLICOTHE — Less than 48 hours after a hard-fought, five-set loss, Unioto bounced back in a big way on Saturday.
The Shermans seized their hosted Invitational’s championship trophy and won six of the seven sets they played in the process.
After beating Vinton County by a 25-17, 25-22 final, Unioto (6-2) ousted Waverly in three sets by a 25-17, 22-25, 25-17 final. That win allowed them to meet with Fairfield Union in the championship match.
The Falcons, behind senior Christian Thompson, had breezed by both Trimble and Chillicothe — 25-9, 25-10 and 25-19, 25-9 finals — to get to that point.
Unioto, however, was a different beast to slay.
The Shermans corralled Thompson and company, earning a 25-21, 25-22 victory and keeping the trophy in place.
“Our girls stepped up and played hard and did what they were trained to do,” Unioto coach Jimmy Hutton said. “That is why they came out on top against a great Fairfield Union team. I’m proud of their determination to win our Invitational.”
Statistically, Kyra Stulley — who has been phenomenal as of late — led the way for the Shermans. In the three matches, the senior posted a team-high 26 kills.
Isabel Link added 20 kills, Kinzli Batson had 26 assists and two aces, Alexa West finished with 34 digs, and Alli Park rounded up five blocks and 15 combined kills in the team’s wins over Waverly and Fairfield Union.
The event’s third place match was between Chillicothe and Waverly with the Cavaliers winning by a 25-14, 26-28, 25-16 final. Vinton County won the consolation bracket with a 25-22, 25-20 win over Westfall.
Unioto is back in action on Tuesday in SVC play, hosting Paint Valley.
