If you remember last season — and how could you forget — the area’s volleyball scene provided plenty of drama and an abundance of success as usual.
Between the SVC, SOC, FAC, SHAC, OVC and MSL-Buckeye, the six conferences within SOSA’s coverage reach, three different programs earned district titles.
But en route to those postseason finishes, there were plenty of individual performances to rave about, multiple records broken and tons of matches that won’t soon be forgotten.
As for this season, we expect much more of the same. But before it happens, for the fourth straight year, we decided to compile a list of the coverage area’s top 30 players. It was an absolute bear to do so, but we think we’ve got a list of 30 athletes who are the absolute best at their craft.
Remember, this list only includes players from within SOSA’s coverage area and it isn’t an end all, be all. We encourage discussion and getting our athletes the recognition they deserve is always our mission.
30. Addy Brewster, Sophomore, Western
2022 statistics: 174 kills, 49 aces, 6 blocks, 299 digs, 319 assists
Tucked in Pike County was Brewster last year who pieced together a magnificent season to start her career. As a freshman, Brewster led the Indians to 14 victories alongside an 8-4 mark in the SOC I. She’s a star in the making with plenty of room to improve. Remember the name.
29. Lauren Redoutey, Senior, Northwest
2022 statistics: 60 kills, 55 aces, 8 blocks, 221 digs, 569 assists
At the center of any of the Mohawks’ successes last year was Redoutey. The junior was a first-year setter and tallied 569 assists — an impressive number by any account — while aiding Northwest to 13 wins. Expect more of the same from her this fall. She’s only gotten better.
28. Megan Booth, Junior, Nelsonville-York
2022 statistics: 24 kills, 78 aces, 1 block, 134 digs, 503 assists
Nelsonville had exactly zero problems within league play last year. In fact, they played 40 sets in TVC action and won 36. Booth helped it happen, totaling 503 assists and adding a team-leading 78 aces to her stat sheet as well. Booth is back for her junior year, looking to add to those totals.
27. Emma Sayre, Senior, West
2022 statistics: 6 kills, 39 aces, 0 blocks, 475 digs, 17 assists
Sayre’s 475 digs last fall set a career high and put her at 1,281 throughout her career. She’s made a difference in all three seasons she’s played and there’s no doubt she’ll be the Senators’ defensive rock once again. Last year, West was 15-9. They’re looking to take the next step.
26. Maddie Entler, Junior, Notre Dame
2022 statistics: 34 kills, 34 aces, 14 blocks, 178 digs, 782 assists
Entler needed just 26 matches to get three-quarters of the way to 1,000 career assists. She helped the Titans collect 21 victories, go 12-0 in the SOC I and reach a district championship game. With a ton of offensive options, 700-plus assists, or more, is absolutely possible again.
25. Chloe Mayo, Junior, Fairland
2022 statistics: 224 kills, 30 aces, 12 blocks, 105 digs, 5 assists
Averaging 2.9 kills per set, Mayo led the Dragons offensively with 224 kills, which helped the team finish 21-3 alongside a share of the OVC championship. If Fairland is to repeat as its conference champion, Mayo, just a junior, will be one of the key names leading that charge.
24. Aubrey Clark, Junior, Westfall
2022 statistics: 182 kills, 3 aces, 48 blocks, 26 digs, 8 assists
The SVC has no shortage of explosive hitters and Clark joined that list last season. As a sophomore, she had 182 kills with a kill percentage of 34.1 — a team-high — in 533 attempts. She also played tall at the net, posting a team-high 48 blocks. Watch out for her in 2023.
23. Addyson Butts, Junior, Miami Trace
2022 statistics: 294 kills, 32 aces, 33 blocks, 36 digs, 1 assist
The Panthers won an outright conference title last season with a pristine 10-0 mark and Butts was a huge reason why. As a sophomore, the middle hitter averaged 4.1 kills per set, which was a team-high, and added 32 aces and 33 blocks to her stat sheet. She’s as legit as they come.
22. Sydney Hughes, Senior, Jackson
2022 statistics: 168 kills, 17 aces, 13 blocks, 277 digs, 214 assists
The Ironladies earned 10 wins last fall and Hughes powered all 10. As a junior, she was basically everywhere, tallying 168 kills, 277 digs and 214 assists. Now, as a senior, she looks to add to those numbers. She’s versatile, smart and knows how to rally her teammates around her.
21. Emma Hinshaw, Senior, Huntington
2022 statistics: 259 kills, 44 aces, 23 blocks, 238 digs, 17 assists
Talk about a breakout season. Hinshaw enjoyed a banner year in 2022, posting 259 kills alongside 238 digs and 44 aces. She was the spark the Huntsmen needed in critical situations. You can expect Huntington to look to her for leadership and production this coming season.
