SOSA Staff Report
CHILLICOTHE — For the first time since its inception, the SOSA Athlete of the Week award will be shared this voting cycle.
Both Chillicothe’s Maleah Oney and Waverly’s Payton Shoemaker turned in magnificent performances this past week.
Oney accounted for 27 kills and 27 digs, helping the Cavaliers win three matches — a winning streak that’s now reached four.
Shoemaker ran for a career-high 362 yards and added three touchdowns on 41 carries in a 31-21 win over Fairland.
Out of 1,185 public votes, Oney accounted for 455 or 38.4 percent of the total. Shoemaker finished second in the voting with 344, Unioto’s Jamarcus Carroll was third with a count of 224, Southeastern’s Skylar Hice was fourth at 137, and Notre Dame’s Claire Dettwiller came in fifth with 25.
Shoemaker earned his co-AOW status by receiving two of the four votes from the guys at SOSA as well.
For their efforts, Shoemaker and Oney will receive a free duffel bag from MOJO-USA, a free t-shirt thanks to Mile Tree Screen Printing and a free Wendy’s combo meal via Schmidt Family Restaurant Group.
